The only real concern with the game’s visuals is the cutscenes, which can look pretty rough at times. The game also has a steady frame rate on the PS4, and features some slick menus. There’s a lot going on in the background of the levels, making the world feel bigger than it really is. It’s safe to say that Sonic has never looked better. It’s a well implemented system that definitely adds to the game, even if you’ll never look as awesome as Sonic himself. You can also rent other peoples’ characters for levels if you’d like, which can be fun as some people get very creative with their characters. You can really personalize your character, making him look wacky and awesome. This includes a whole bunch of stuff that Sonic fans are going to love. After every level and every challenge you complete you are rewarded with a bunch of cosmetic upgrades for your character. That being said, the original character does give you the opportunity to unlock a slew of costumes and accessories. Even setting gameplay aside, these levels are also the worst part of the story because your character doesn’t talk. To be frank, it’s slow and boring, and doesn’t offer engaging gameplay. A great example of this is the grappling hook you’re forced to use in these levels. They abandon the speed aspect entirely and focus instead of much less enjoyable gameplay mechanics. This is undoubtedly the worst part of the game. Unfortunately there’s the whole other third of the game that has you playing as your original character. If the game consisted of just these two parts, I think Forces would be a much better experience. Jumping and hitting enemies at the right time throughout the course of the levels feels satisfying, especially while maintaining that speed. The controls can be clunky, but the sense of speed central to a good Sonic experience is there, making each level fun to blast through. The Modern Sonic levels are enjoyable as well. Controlling Sonic in these levels feels better than the rest of the game’s formats. The 2D Sonic gameplay is solid and might be the best part of the game. The 2D levels as Classic Sonic are pretty much what you’d expect, and they’re very good. It’s split pretty evenly as far as I could tell. The game’s 30 levels are split between time spent playing as your original character, Modern Sonic, and Classic Sonic. There’s 30 levels in the main story and levels usually don’t take more then 3 – 5 minutes to beat. Also, don’t go in expecting a lengthy experience: The game took me 4 hours to beat and I had even replayed some levels along the way. It’s a good time if you’re not expecting an actual good story. It was great to see a number of fan-favorite Sonic characters coming together to help fight (or fight alongside) Egg Man’s army. The story itself is absolutely predictable. The new villain is very serious, and follows all the most common villain tropes. The plot follows a war against Egg Man and his army, which is lead by his strongest warrior, Infinite. I found myself enjoying the bad voice-acting, with Sonic especially making me chuckle a number of times. Like the movie Sharknado or something else along those lines. As strange as it may sound, for me, it’s so bad that it’s actually good. The game’s story overall is both silly and poorly delivered. I never really felt like my character fit into the game, and his bad backstory didn’t help. What’s worse, you don’t say a word throughout the game, even when other characters talk to you. Their heads look oddly small in comparison with the regular cast. For one, no character you create looks nearly as cool as the regular Sonic characters. There’s some negatives as well, unfortunately. They give you lots of options and by the end you really feel like you’ve made something unique. Creating your own character is fun, and the game’s character creation is quite in-depth. You make your own hedgehog (or other species there are several options) and join the rebellion lead by Knuckles. That’s where you come in! Sonic Forces’ biggest new feature is the unique character you create. With the help of a few of Sonic’s old enemies, they make quick work of the blue hedgehog. The new villain, “Infinite,” has been created by Dr. The game starts with Sonic facing off against a new villain and losing. It almost feels as though the game embraces its bad elements to the point that it feels a bit like a parody of itself. The best way I can describe the game is, it’s so bad, that it ends up being kind of good. It’s hard for me to comprehend many of the decisions behind Sonic Forces. Unfortunately, the new game leaves a lot to be desired. After going old school with Sonic Mania, Sonic the hedgehog is now back in the 3D realm with Sonic Forces.
